Takayasu Arteritis as Siragata Vata: An Ayurvedic Interpretation of a Rare Vasculitis – A Case Study

Abstract:

Takayasu arteritis is a rare granulomatous vasculitis in which mainly the aorta and its main branches are affected. In this disease, mainly the luminal of arteries are constricted, and gradually cause ischemia. Takayasu arteritis, which is characterised by deep-seated dhatu involvement and obstruction of vata by rakta and kapha in Sira, as in its earliest stages and Gambhira Vatarakta in the advanced stages. This case study describes a 26-year-old female diagnosed with type III Takayasu Arteritis, having complaints of abdominal pain, low back ache, recurrent episodes of nausea and vomiting, generalised weakness. She was on steroidal treatment and got symptomatic relief with the recurrence of symptoms. Ayurvedic management focuses on vataraktahara, rakta prashadana and shodhana chikitsha using basti.
