Vol. No. 21, Special Issue No 2 2026

Abstract:

Allergic Rhinitis (AR) is a Type-I hypersensitivity disorder mediated by Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies and is characterized by symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, nasal and ocular itching, and post-nasal drip. It is a chronic and recurrent condition that significantly affects the patient’s quality of life, sleep, and productivity. In modern times, the prevalence of allergic rhinitis has increased due to urbanization, environmental pollution, and changing lifestyle patterns. From an Ayurvedic perspective, Allergic Rhinitis shows a close resemblance to Vataja Pratishyaya, described under Nasa Roga in classical texts such as Ashtanga Hridaya and Sushruta Samhita. Vataja Pratishyaya is characterized by symptoms like Kshavathu (frequent sneezing), Sheeta-Tanu Nasika Srava (thin cold nasal discharge), Shirashoola (headache), Svarabheda (hoarseness of voice), and Kasa (dry cough), which correlate with the clinical features of allergic rhinitis. Considering the similarity in signs and symptoms, the patient was managed on the principles of Vataja Pratishyaya. The therapeutic regimen included Dashmool Kwatha, Chitrak Haritaki, Tribhuvan Kirti Ras and Pratimarsha Nasya with Anu Taila, which provided significant relief in symptoms. These therapies offer an effective, economical, and herbal approach in the management of Vataja Pratishyaya (Allergic Rhinitis).
