Mental Health Sciences with Special Reference to Obesity : An Ayurvedic Perspective

Dr. Diksha Dhiraj, Prof(Dr.) Aruna Ojha

Vol. No. 21, Special Issue No 2 2026

Abstract:

Background: Obesity has emerged as a major global health challenge and is frequently associated with psychological disturbances such as stress, anxiety, depression, and emotional eating. Modern mental health sciences recognize a bidirectional relationship between mental health disorders and metabolic diseases.

Objective: The present review aims to explore the relationship between mental health and obesity with special reference to Ayurvedic principles and to highlight the role of Ayurveda in understanding the pathogenesis and management of obesity.

Methodology: The present study is based on a conceptual review of classical Ayurvedic texts including Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya, along with modern scientific literature related to mental health and obesity.

Results: Ayurveda describes obesity under the condition Sthaulya or Medoroga, which develops due to derangement of Kapha Dosha, Meda Dhatu, and Agni along with improper dietary habits, sedentary lifestyle, and disturbed mental states. Psychological disturbances caused by imbalance of Rajas and Tamas Gunas contribute to unhealthy eating behavior and metabolic imbalance.

Conclusion: Ayurveda provides a holistic framework for understanding obesity by integrating physical, psychological, and lifestyle factors. Adoption of Ayurvedic principles such as Ahara, Vihara, Yoga, and Ayurvedic therapeutics may provide an effective approach for prevention and management of obesity.
