Effect of Shirodhara on Mental Health Disorders: A Review of Classical and Contemporary Evidence

Nainika J Chouta, Niranjan Rao

Vol. No. 21, Special Issue No 2 2026

Abstract:

Shirodhara, classified under Murdhni Taila in classical Ayurvedic texts, involves the continuous pouring of medicated liquid over the forehead for a stipulated period. It is among the most widely used non-pharmacological interventions for psychoneurological and psychosomatic disorders. Despite its growing clinical application, a unified conceptual framework integrating its classical rationale with contemporary neuroscientific evidence has not been established.
